World Sight Day

Lions World Sight - October 10
Join Lions clubs around the world in Lions World Sight Day to educate your community about the need to conquer preventable blindness and preserve sight.

Lions Clubs International will mark Lions World Sight Day with a special screening in Los Angeles, California, USA. In addition, Lions plans to participate in an event in Washington, DC, USA, which will underscore the importance of sight prevention. In 2001, special activities were held in Sao Paulo, Brazil; London, England; New Zealand and South Africa and by Lions clubs around the world.

World Sight Day

Focus on Diabetic Retinopathy and Diabetes
This year Lions World Sight Day will focus on diabetic retinopathy, a common complication of diabetes, which is the leading cause of vision loss in adults in the industrialized world. With diabetes reaching epidemic levels around the world, diabetic retinopathy is expected to increase.

Currently it is estimated that 150 million people in the world have diabetes and the number is predicted to increase to 300 million by 2025.

World Sight Day

Increasingly children are being affected by adult onset diabetes, increasing their risk of vision complications since in general the longer people have diabetes the greater the risk of developing eye diseases.

Diabetes also increases the risk of other eye diseases such as glaucoma and cataract.
