History of Local Club

“Indiana’s First & Finest”

Lions Clubs International is the world's largest service club organization with 1.4 million members in 44,600 clubs in 190 countries and geographical areas. Through membership in a Lions club, people not only help those in need, but have opportunities to develop personal friendships and gain valuable leadership skills.

The Lafayette Lions Club was organized on March 23, 1920 and chartered on June 16 of that same year. It was the first Lions Club to be chartered in the state of Indiana. The Lafayette club is composed of a diverse group of men and women committed to Lionism and service to others. Current members include executives, educators, bankers, representatives from local industry, homemakers, other professionals, and retirees.

Local Focus & Causes

  • Our Club pays for eye exams and glasses for needy children and adults in the Greater Lafayette area. It is estimated that our club has helped over 2,000 individuals through this program.
  • The Lafayette Club currently sponsors six Leader dogs in this area. Dogs and owners are matched and trained in Rochester, Michigan before returning to their homes in this area. Our Club supports the dogs and works with the owners to help them live more normal lives.
  • Cancer is a disease that is yet to be cured. The Lafayette Club supports Purdue University’s research into this disease by providing money and honoring outstanding cancer researchers each year.
  • Our community is cleaner thanks to the efforts of the Club members. Throughout the year our Lions walk a section of highway (Ind. 43) in West Lafayette picking up litter and other discarded item.
  • The Lafayette Club Members volunteer time and resources to Habitat for Humanity. Our club, along with Battleground and West Lafayette clubs, provided financial support as well as many hours of volunteer work with such tasks as installing dry wall, roofing, painting, clean-up etc.
